Mohamed Salah is yet to put pen to a contract extension with Liverpool as both parties are yet to agree to terms. The Egyptian’s contract expires in a year and the 30-year-old could leave for free next summer, which Jamie O’Hara considers “unacceptable”.
Speaking on talkSport (h/t Liverpool Echo), the 35-year-old compared the Egyptian’s situation with Sadio Mane’s and called the sale of the Senegalese “a good bit of business”. And O’Hara believes the Reds cannot let Salah go for free.
“Now Salah could go on a free – that is unacceptable. Liverpool have set the benchmark for how to do business as a football club and they’ve done it brilliantly.
“But they’ve got to get this sorted out because Mo Salah cannot leave that football club on a free.”
Signing from Roma in 2017 to very little fanfare, Salah has exceeded what was expected from him at Anfield. Nobody would’ve envisioned the Egyptian scoring 32 goals in his debut season for Liverpool, setting a Premier League record.
The 30-year-old hasn’t slowed down since, helping the side to every possible major title. Alongside Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, the Egyptian led one of the deadliest attacks in world football.
In 254 appearances for the Reds in his five years at the club, Salah has scored 156 goals and provided 63 assists. With an ever changing and evolving squad, the Egyptian has remained the talisman for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
While Salah recently turned 30, fans would argue he still has a few more years left at the top of the game. With the consistency the Egyptian has shown in his time, it would be wise of FSG to heed the star’s demands.
The financial implications of letting someone like the 30-year-old leave for free would be monumental. Forwards who score 30 goals almost every season are hard to find.
Players like Salah are hard to get in the current market without spending an enormous amount. Even if teams spend the money, the quality and consistency of a player cannot be guaranteed.
While we have strengthened with the additions of Diogo Jota
, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez over the years, the influence of the Egyptian is unmatched. If Liverpool do end up letting Salah go for free next summer, it would require a mammoth task from other players in the squad to cover up for the Egyptian’s influence on the team.
