Report: PL club preparing £30m bid for Liverpool star who Steven Gerrard is a ‘huge fan of’

LFC Transfer News: Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard accelerate pursuit of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Aston Villa seem to be ‘pressing ahead’ with the signing of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to the Daily Star (h/t the Express). Steven Gerrard is a ‘huge fan’ of the England international.

The West Midlands side is apparently preparing a bid of around £30million for Gomez, who is struggling for starts at Liverpool. Those who watched the Reds in the past few seasons know just how abruptly Gomez has been relegated to the bench.

There was a time when he was the club’s preferred choice for partnering with Virgil van Dijk under Jurgen Klopp. Last season, he was mostly playing as a makeshift backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Now 25, Gomez is entering the prime years of his career. Joel Matip and van Dijk aren’t getting any younger, but can the former Charlton Athletic defender wait that long to become a regular for us once again?

Gomez off to Villa?

Ibrahima Konate is the biggest hurdle in his path to first-team football right now. The young French centre-back came in last summer and made himself Klopp’s go-to man for UEFA Champions League and domestic cup games.

Gomez would also know that there is a World Cup around the corner. John Stones and Harry Maguire have been Gareth Southgate’s go-to men on a lot of occasions, but with 26

instead of 23 players travelling to Qatar this year, Gomez would fancy his chances of making the cut.

It’s clear why Gomez would appeal to a club like the Villans. He is 25, homegrown, versatile, and would be eager to prove a point in order to be a regular for the Three Lions.

More Liverpool News:

It remains to be seen how he manages that with Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa also at Villa Park, but that is something to think about if the Birmingham-based club gets a deal across the line. The Reds are apparently keen on keeping him.
