Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool to sign a quality midfielder this summer

While speaking in an interview as quoted by Daily Express, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson suggested Jurgen Klopp should sign one more midfielder before concluding his summer transfer window activity. 

Liverpool are off to a strong start in the summer transfer window, having already finalised deals for Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay and Fulham player Fabio Carvalho who is yet to be unveiled.

Despite the stability in the squad, Phil Thompson believes Liverpool should secure one more midfield signing as it would guarantee the future of the Reds’ midfield contingent. 

“I would like to think we’ll be having a look at a midfield player as well, but last season at centre forward we ended up playing Sadio Mane there, so we needed to find someone to play there permanently.”

The Liverpool legend described how signing Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have made a massive difference in boosting the team’s depth and he believes the Reds should seek a similar kind of stability in midfield with another reinforcement.   

“Now If you’d have said 18 months ago that Sadio Mane would be leaving Liverpool, we’d have been frightened. We had players like Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, who didn’t fill us full of hope, to come in and play those positions. But then we signed Jota, and then we signed Luis Diaz and now Nunez, and so things have moved on and we feel a lot more comfortable with what we have.”

At the beginning of the previous campaign, James Milner, Thiago Alcântara, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones were hit with injuries, causing a brief injury crisis in midfield for the Reds. Although they have all fully recovered, the event has made Liverpool aware of the risks associated with failing to reinforce key positions lacking depth.

We have lost significant Premier League points owing to the midfield injury crisis. We may soon need to reorganise our squad since several players who play in the middle of the park have been unreliable. 

There are no other young players in Liverpool’s midfield group outside Curtis Jones, which could be problematic for Jurgen Klopp’s long-term goals.

Finding talents before they become world-class players has always been the defining characteristic of Liverpool’s transfer strategy. The Jurgen Klopp era has seen some success with it thus far because certain players were acquired for less than their transfer fee. More of the same will be welcome at Anfield this summer.
