Confirmed: Attacker released by Liverpool last month finds new club

Transfer News: Former Liverpool winger Ben Woodburn joins new club Preston North End

Liverpool released Ben Woodburn last month at the end of his contract, and the winger has now officially joined Preston North End, as confirmed on their official website.

The 22-year-old was on trial with the Lilywhites in the opening week of pre-season and has now put pen to paper on a one-year deal. Ryan Lowe would be eager to work with the winger he tried to sign at previous clubs.

Woodburn went on to give his thoughts on the move. The winger seems excited and is looking forward to working with a manager he knows well and trusts

.

“I’m very excited for the deal to be done. Obviously, I’ve been on trial for a week now and things have gone pretty well, so I’m buzzing to get started as a Preston player. Obviously, when I got called and told I could come and train, I was buzzing. I wanted to show the gaffer what I could do, luckily I’ve earned a contract out of it.”

Farewell, Woodburn

Having played on loan at teams such as Oxford United, Blackpool, and most recently Hearts, Woodburn never really got going at LFC. He still holds a very distinct record at the club.

The Nottingham-born Welsh winger is still the youngest goalscorer in the history of Liverpool. Woodburn scored Leeds United in the EFL Cup in 2016 at the age of 17 years and 45 days, breaking Michael Owen’s record.

His absence won’t be felt by the senior team on paper as he was nowhere getting into Jurgen Klopp’s team. But having been on the club’s books for 16 years, he was certainly a player fans knew and wanted to succeed.

Aged 22, a decision had to be taken on his career. He was seeing no playing time with the Reds, having made just 11 senior starts in his entire career here- that’s as many senior caps he has for the Welsh national team.

The goal against Leeds remains his only senior goal for the club to date. There is no point in wondering what could have been. He is still young and at a new club where he can start afresh.

Hopefully, he does well there.
