Liverpool ‘passed up chance’ to sign Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips

Transfer News: Liverpool turned down the chance to pursue Kalvin Phillips before Manchester City this summer

According to transfer news on National News Sport via SportBible, Liverpool passed up on the chance to sign Kalvin Phillips this summer before the Englishman sealed a move to Manchester City.

The Cityzens unveiled Phillips as their latest summer signing a few days back for a fee that could rise to £45million with add-ons. That makes him a very expensive signing considering he may not be a regular starter at Man City.

Rodri is impeccable, Kevin de Bruyne is irreplaceable while Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and Ilkay Gundagon could fight for a place in Pep Guardiola’s midfield three next season.

Leeds United star, Kalvin Phillips, was on the transfer radar of Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Liverpool fans can now probably tell City fans that Phillips was a player the Reds didn’t even want in the first place. It is believed they turned down the chance to sign him in the first place this summer.

A good move?

Now that comes as a surprise. It is said that the Reds considered the transfer too easy to complete, and hence, let go of the chance to sign Youri Tielemans and Yves Bissouma.

The Reds need an urgent strengthening in midfield because one injury to the likes of Fabinho Tavares or Thiago Alcantara and we would have to rely on subpar options to complete our midfield trio.

Jordan Henderson, as good as he may be as a leader, isn’t the most happening midfielder in the attacking third, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is rarely trusted by Jurgen Klopp.

City have signed a good option in midfield here but perhaps, it’s not wise to question our transfer strategy given our track record in the past 7 years. Maybe, the club is waiting for the right target but it is imperative we don’t leave it pending for too long.
