According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Liverpool Echo), Real Madrid have placed a very specific price tag of between £21.6m and £25.8m on Liverpool target Marco Asensio.
The Spanish winger is ‘willing to take a pay cut’ if he gets the chance to join a promising project. Last week, as claimed by Spanish outlet Sport via Paisley Gates (h/t the Mirror), it was said that the Reds are willing to meet Asensio’s wage demands.
The Spanish winger arrived at Real Madrid in 2015 when they bought the attacker off RCD Mallorca’s hands. Since then, he has enjoyed immense success in Spain’s capital.
Asensio has won three UEFA Champions League titles with Los Blancos but his influence in the first-team set-up is gradually decreasing. He only played 206 minutes in last season’s UCL campaign for Madrid.
Now 26, he is in his prime years. Asensio would know the importance of regular club football if he wants to stay in Spain’s national team set-up. Moreover, it could be a time for something new as well.
He has won almost every major trophy with Los Galacticos but he hasn’t really been a pinned starter for them- especially under Carlo Ancelotti. With Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo on the rise, his future at the club seems bleak.
However, it remains to be seen what the Reds would have in store for him were he to arrive at L4. We already have Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah to start down the flanks.
It would, however, be interesting to see if Jurgen Klopp then utilises him in midfield- a position we desperately need to future-proof. The German manager likes his midfielders to be combative and contribute defensively when out of possession.
If Asensio can do that, he would be a smart signing. The price tag seems reasonable and if he is open to a pay cut, as claimed above, then there isn’t really any major reason for us not to go after him.
