Jurgen Klopp has ‘requested’ Liverpool to sign 26-year-old star as AC Milan ‘cool’ interest

Transfer News: Liverpool requested by Jurgen Klopp to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio

Jurgen Klopp has apparently requested Liverpool to sign Real Madrid winger, Marco Asensio, who is linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, according to Sport (h/t the Express).

The 26-year-old could be sold for £25.7million this summer with Los Blancos willing to come down from their previous asking price of £42.8m. AC Milan were apparently interested in his signature but have since cooled their interest.

Asensio has always been an important part of Real Madrid’s side since his move from RCD Mallorca in 2015. But he has seen his playing time reduce in recent seasons.

Last campaign, he wasn’t used as much as he would have liked in the UEFA Champions League. Despite Asensio winning his third Champions League crown, the campaign showcased where he stood in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

What next for Asensio?

With Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr still young, it is hard for him to break into their lineup as a regular starter. And the Spanish star could be on the move this summer.

While such news should be taken with a pinch of salt, if Klopp has indeed requested the club to sign Asensio, then it’s not hard to find sense in the German’s actions. There is no urgent need for him.

But he can be a very important player for us in cup games as well as off the bench. The Reds challenged for all four trophies last season and would want to do it again. That is a task which is not as easy as it seems.

Takumi Minamino was a big reason why we won two trophies last season but he is now off to AS Monaco. How do LFC fill such voids- of squad players? Asensio is a very able option in that regard but would he want to accept such a subdued role?

There is, of course, the chance of him fighting for regular first-team minutes but that’s not a fight he is guaranteed to win. Would it make sense for him to swap Madrid for another team without getting rid of the insecurity around his playing time? That’s anyone’s guess.
