Danny Murphy surprised to see Liverpool star Joe Gomez sign a new contract until 2027

Speaking on TalkSPORT (h/t the Express), Danny Murphy expressed his surprise at seeing Joe Gomez renew his Liverpool contract, as he gave his viewpoints from both sides of the table.

The Reds knew they were in danger of losing Gomez this summer, with Aston Villa a side linked with him. In order to secure his long-term future at the club, they made an offer to Gomez.

And the Englishman accepted it. The current deal runs until 2027 and that effectively means that he will be a Liverpool player for a while.

For Murphy, this comes as a great signing for Jurgen. He has now ensured that the Reds go into the new season with four top-quality centre-backs.

“From Liverpool’s perspective, great signing. Very good at his job, good enough to play top-level football.”

It makes sense for Liverpool to tie him down to a new deal. Gomez can play as a centre-back as well on both flanks of the backline. It is hard to easily find a defender that versatile and talented in today’s market- especially one who is just 25.

But Murphy is surprised that Gomez jumped the gun and renewed his deal so early. Murphy makes sense here as well, considering the former Charlton Athletic defender knows the competition above him in the pecking order.

“From his perspective, I’m surprised. I’m surprised. I get why you don’t want to leave such a brilliant club that’s winning everything, but if you’re not going to play…”

“The evidence last season was that Matip and Konate are ahead of him. He’s obviously had a conversation with Jurgen Klopp who has reassured him and he’s going to get games. But I’m surprised that he maybe hasn’t waited another year.

All said and done, the deal is done. Gomez is here to stay and the Reds go into the pre-season tour relaxed about the contract situation of the defender after already renewing Mohamed Salah’s contract until 2025.

Gomez has years ahead of him. Virgil van Dijk just turned 31 and Joel Matip isn’t getting any younger. If he is patient, the English star will get his time out in the sun.
