Jurgen Klopp reveals what he said to Divock Origi during their last Liverpool hug at Anfield

Divock Origi has sealed a transfer to AC Milan this summer as a free agent after Liverpool lost their Belgian striker as a free agent.

The former Lille star was there when Jurgen Klopp took over LFC in 2015. Since then, it has been a romantic journey between the striker and the fans.

He started seeing more game time under the German boss as time went on but his best moments seemed to always come off the bench. Take for instance the 2018/19 season.

Origi seemed to score on all the big occasions. But he was so good off the bench that perhaps he was never really looked at as a first-team option.

Now that he’s gone, Klopp has revealed what he said to Origi during their last Liverpool hug at Anfield after the Reds beat Wolves 3-1 on gameweek 38. But before that, he underlined once again just what an icon Origi is at Liverpool while talking to Liverpoolfc.com:

“When you think about Divock, you cannot avoid a smile, because so many great moments were only possible because of him. Absolutely outstanding. Like the shoulder/header at Newcastle; so many things; the goals against Everton; Champions League, the final. Absolutely great.”

Klopp accepts responsibility for not handing more playing time to Origi but mentions that he had nothing but good words for the 27-year-old striker after the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers came to a close.

“We wish him all the best. That’s what I said to him when I gave him a hug after our last Premier League game when he got his farewell. I said, ‘Wherever you go, I know you will be a success and I wish you all the luck in life because you deserve it’.”

Origi’s absence may well be felt- make no mistake about it. Our frontline is good but do we have a specialist to come off the bench when we desperately need goals?

One of Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota would have to take up that role, or perhaps Darwin Nunez can start off slow and as a bench player. But that is something that only time will tell.
