Transfer News: Liverpool keeping an eye on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams
Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t the Mirror) states that Liverpool are keeping tabs on young Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams.
The 19-year-old teenage winger had a breakthrough campaign last season and is a trusted regular in the first team for Marcelino. He currently has a £42million release clause in his contract and has featured for Spain’s U21 team.
Nico is the brother of Athletic’s number 9, Inaki, who has become one of La Liga’s most feared attackers. The two brothers share the same attacking intent and drive down the flanks.
But the teenager’s release clause is certainly a bit steep. Of course, it could be a bargain for any potential suitor if the Spaniard goes on to fulfil his potential- but right now, it would surely seem a little high.
What next for Nico Williams?
Nevertheless, it is also said that Manchester United are also interested. Nico is just getting started in Spain’s first division and it would be a gamble to bring him in right now.
The Reds are also in no urgent need of a winger. Mohamed Salah is here to stay until 2025 after signing a new contract, while we already have Luis Diaz.
Diogo Jota can play down the flanks and so can Harvey Elliott. If Nico is open to being a squad player right now, this won’t be a shabby move. But it is hard to imagine where he would fit in at the moment.

It’s best to hold onto our funds and use it on a player that can strengthen our first team, such as a midfielder. That area is perhaps the one that can use urgent strengthening.
