Transfer News: Liverpool show interest in signing AS Monaco and West Ham United target Amadou Onana
According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi via Get French Football News (h/t Liverpool.com), West Ham United are preparing another bid for Liverpool target Amadou Onana.
The 20-year-old Lille midfielder has drawn interest from a lot of clubs, including the Hammers, the Reds, Everton, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Leicester City. That is certainly a long list of suitors- which could only drive his price up.
West Ham have had a £19million bid already turned down for the Senegal-born midfielder representing Belgium. It remains to be seen how high the French team values their young midfield star.
He can play as a number eight as well as a number six. Still just 20, his imposing physique makes him a presence that is felt by the opposition when they are in possession of the ball.
Onana can be the understudy we need for Fabinho. The Brazilian is arguably our only specialised defensive midfielder, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and even James Milner filling in when necessary.
A talent brought to Germany from Belgium by TSG Hoffenheim’s academy, he made his name in Hamburger SV’s senior team. At Lille, he is now being eyed as a potential replacement for Aurelien Tchouameni, who left for Real Madrid this summer.
Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are, of course, still in our ranks. But in Onana, we get a defensive midfielder who specialises in the defensive side of things.
Georginio Wijnaldum was a trusted competitor for Fabinho Tavares in that role. But we haven’t signed any senior central midfielder since the Dutchman’s departure to PSG.

This seems like a deal worth pursuing, but not one that should assume more importance than Jude Bellingham. The Borussia Dortmund star is elite and an immediate starter for most teams in the world and the Reds would be very, very wise to try and sign him.
