Liverpool youngster joins Famalicao on a season-long loan

Liverpool youngster Owen Beck joins Famalicao on a season-long loan

The Liverpool official site has confirmed that Wales Under-21 defender Owen Beck who is yet to make his Premier League debut with the Reds, has been transferred on a season-long loan to Portuguese club Famalicao.

The 19-year-old who is a great-nephew of former Liverpool and Wales striker Ian Rush, joined the club when he was just 13 years old. He recently signed a new long-term contract

with the Merseysiders in July 2021.

Due to his unrelenting style of left-back play, Beck emerged as perhaps the best player in Liverpool’s junior divisions last season. He was a devastating outlet for the under-23s.

In addition to training frequently with Jurgen Klopp’s group throughout the season, the Welsh teenager made two outings for the first team.

Beck has so much potential that, in the early weeks of the transfer window, teams from top Football Leagues, including those in the Portuguese League, Ligue 1, Serie A, and other leagues, expressed interest in signing him.

He has made the bold decision to sign with Famalicao in the Primeira Liga, with the team announcing a one-year loan contract for the young player.

Famalicao placed ninth in the Portuguese top division last season, but their first-choice left-back left this summer after his loan period was up. There is therefore a likelihood that Beck gets a regular starting position under Rui Pedro Silva, who was previously Wolves’ assistant manager.

But with limited options available to him at Anfield, he finds himself in a challenging position, trailing not just Andy Robertson but also Kostas Tsimikas.

There is a potential that Beck might return and force Klopp to make a difficult choice next summer if he establishes himself as a major player in Portugal.
