Transfer News: Liverpool make contact with Sporting CP for Matheus Nunes
Liverpool have enquired about Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, according to Jornal de Noticias via Paisley Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo). The Reds have contacted the Portuguese club over a potential move for the 23-year-old.
Other clubs in the Premier League interested in the Portugal international’s services are Chelsea and Wolves. But Sporting are said to be unwilling to sell their young midfielder as they’ve already parted ways with Joao Palhinha this summer.
Nunes’ contract keeps him with the Portuguese side until 2026. A release clause of £50.6 million has been inserted in his current deal.
Being in and around the Portuguese side’s first team since 2020, the 23-year-old has established himself at the José Alvalade Stadium. In his two years at the club, the Portugal international has played 99 times for the Lisbon-based side.
Liverpool midfield options
Currently, Liverpool’s midfield has several options. Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are the three most prominent members in the middle of the park.
Naby Keita also managed to carve a place for himself in the first XI at times last season. The Guinean played an important role in the side, providing more attacking impetus through the middle.
Curtis Jones has established himself in the squad since his debut in 2019. The young Scouser has featured in 74 games for the first team in his time at the Merseyside club. The 21-year-old has proven himself whenever he’s called upon.
Harvey Elliott is another prospect in the side who Jurgen Klopp has preferred to deploy in the middle of the park. The youngster featured heavily at the start of the last campaign before an ankle injury sidelined him.

The Reds are ready to go into next season with more or less the same names in midfield as last year. Having an extra body wouldn’t hurt. But fans will feel Nunes isn’t the high-profile signing who’ll necessarily have the impact required to win titles.
