Former Anfield favourite’s feelings made clear as he completes rival switch

Raheem Sterling would’ve been open to a move back to Liverpool this summer

Raheem Sterling ‘wouldn’t have ruled out a move to Liverpool’ had the option been available, according to The Athletic

(Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror]. The 27-year-old has now joined Chelsea from Manchester City.

The former Reds winger would’ve considered the option of coming back to Merseyside had any deal materialised. But now the England international has joined the Blues for around £50 million.

Sterling joined City in the summer window of 2015 from Liverpool. The transfer disappointed the Reds fans as the 27-year-old was considered one of the team’s leading players. Spectators felt betrayed as the player made a name for himself in Merseyside.

His move to City has been successful in terms of silverware. But Sterling has won every trophy except the Champions League since his departure. Liverpool can boast one after beating Tottenham in the 2018/19 season.

The England international has improved his game a lot under Pep Guardiola. Fans who’ve seen him play regularly since his Liverpool days will have noticed his finishing getting better over the years.

A potent attack

Currently, the Reds boast a potent attacking line. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have been two of the most successful forwards at the club. The Egyptian has become our main man up front.

Sadio Mane left the club at the end of last season. But Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for big money. The striker made a name for himself in Portugal, scoring a lot of goals.

If the Reds and the England international had decided on a homecoming this summer, it would’ve been interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp used him. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have made an important place for themselves in the German’s squad.

A move back would’ve been exciting on a lot of fronts. The Anfield crowd usually boos Sterling when the Cityzens visit the stadium. We’d also be taking one of our rivals’ main players, strengthening our squad in the process.
