Transfer News: Liverpool target Ousmane Dembele has a £42 million release clause in his contract.
According to the official account of FC Barcelona on Twitter (h/t Liverpool Echo), Ousmane Dembele has signed a new contract at Camp Nou, putting an end to speculation with clubs such as Liverpool.
His current deal expired last month and he was a free agent going into July. That would have obviously caught the eyes of several top teams, of which Liverpool were one.
Signing a player of his calibre and age profile for nothing in transfer fees would bode well for any top team. Just look at the second half of last season that Dembele had under Xavi Hernandez.
He was electric down the flanks for FCB and was their chief creator in the final third. But any hopes of him coming to Liverpool this summer have now been dashed.
The French winger, who won the FIFA World Cup with France back in 2018, has signed a two-year extension at Barcelona. His current deal will expire in 2024.
This is one deal the Reds would have been smart to complete, but nevertheless, it’s nothing that would derail our plans for next season. Mohamed Salah is here to stay after extending his contract until 2025.
Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino make for two very good options for squad rotation with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah our chief threat down the flanks. Dembele would have been a big name to have on the club’s books as well.
Given his talent and reputation, he would have wanted nothing but the starting spot at LFC from day one. It is hard to think who he would have replaced in our starting XI right now.
Darwin Nunez has been brought in to lead the line and it seems that the Reds are well stocked down the flanks, with Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho two other youngsters versatile enough to play in those positions.
