Liverpool’s unlikely 2020/21 hero joins Blackpool on loan

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams joins Championship side Blackpool on a season-long loan

Rhys Williams has joined Blackpool from Liverpool on a season-long loan, as per Liverpool Echo. The 21-year-old leaves the Reds once again after a move to Swansea City last season.

Williams is best known for stepping into the XI when Liverpool were devoid of options back in the 2020/21 season. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were out for most of the season with injuries, leaving the Reds short at the back.

Williams and Nat Phillips came into the side and managed to help the team to a top-four finish. The last few weeks of that particular campaign saw the duo being heavily involved in the side.

The 21-year-old was unable to make a mark in Wales and was called back halfway through his loan spell last season. Since then, the youngster has only played for the U23 side. With our stalwarts in defence back to full fitness, it was a gigantic task to break into the XI.

Williams back in the Championship

Now, a loan move to Blackpool awaits him. The Seasiders just got promoted to the Championship a year back. The Lancashire-based club finished 16th in England’s second tier.

Blackpool provides another opportunity for Williams to experience more first-team action. The Championship is a relentless league and good for players to develop in.

Proving yourself in English football’s second tier automatically puts the eyes of Premier League clubs on you. And that’s exactly what the 21-year-old should aim for. The Anfield crowd has witnessed his mettle first-hand in a high-pressure situation.

Fans will hope this move doesn’t end the same way the Swansea one did. Williams had shown his quality at the highest level for the Merseysiders when we were in dire need. Hopefully, the 21-year-old comes back stronger and fights for his place in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
