Liverpool star Naby Keita cannot wait to face RB Leipzig
Naby Keita will have somewhat of a homecoming as Liverpool prepares to face RB Leipzig on 21 July at the Red Bull Arena. The Guinean joined the Reds from Die Roten Bullen in the summer transfer window of 2018.
The 27-year-old moved from Salzburg to Leipzig back in 2016 and made a name for himself in the Bundesliga. Keita spent two seasons in Germany before the Reds came knocking and prised away the midfielder.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the former Leipzig star is happy to return to the town where he developed as a professional. The 27-year-old is indebted to the German side.
“That’s where I really progressed as a player and that’s where Liverpool first saw me and decided to bring me to the club.”
Since arriving to Merseyside, Keita hasn’t had the best of times. His performances haven’t been up to the mark and the midfielder has often been out of Jurgen Klopp’s plans over the years.
The Guinean hasn’t lived up to fans’ expectations. The 27-year-old has hardly been a regular for the Reds and hasn’t had the impact people hoped he would in the middle of the park.
Keita is glad to be reuniting with his former teammates and club in Germany. The Guinean is excited for the game against the young and vibrant Leipzig side.
“I’ll be really happy to go back to see my old teammates and my old club. It’s a young team that plays football the right way and in a good spirit. So, I think it’s going to be a great game.”
Keita did manage to rejuvenate his career at Anfield last season. The 27-year-old enjoyed a good run out last season and largely impressive in his outings.
Over the years, Keita has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at Anfield. But the 2021/22 season has been a good one for the Guinean. He featured 40 times for Liverpool. It could’ve been more had the 27-year-old not had injury issues and a call-up to the national side for the AFCON.
