Fabrizio Romano rubbishes Liverpool interest in 23-year-old Portuguese international

Fabrizio Romano rubbishes Liverpool move for Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes

In recent days, speculation has grown that Liverpool is setting the stage for a Matheus Nunes bid, prompting transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano via Twitter to provide clarification on the situation.

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder has recently been widely linked with the Reds. After missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, he seems to be the ideal complement to Liverpool’s midfield.

Nunes would play in the deeper areas providing the much-needed backup option for Fabinho, and earlier this week, sources from Portugal indicated the midfielder had been regarded as a ‘priority’

target and that Liverpool are preparing a bid.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has entirely discredited any idea that Nunes will sign this summer, claiming that the Reds haven’t made any approaches and that there isn’t any indication of ‘negotiations.’

Jude Bellingham, a star player for Borussia Dortmund, is well-known to have many admirers in Liverpool. However, after selling Erling Haaland, they will keep potential suitors waiting until at least 2023, with Romano suggesting the German club sees the Englishman as ‘untouchable’ this summer.

Fabio Carvalho has already joined the Reds and has appeared very promising in the pre-season. The ex-Fulham teenager contributed to Darwin Nunez’s fourth goal on Thursday and helped secure a convincing victory over RB Leipzig during the pre-season.

Liverpool’s aim to not impede the development of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, and Fabio Carvalho is one of the reasons they might be reluctant to sign another midfielder this summer. The youthful group is all rising, but they all have a long way to go before they can demand regular playing time.

Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, and Fabinho continue to make up the strongest midfield three for the Reds. However, James Milner and Naby Keita are also taken into consideration by Klopp, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still has something to offer.

Liverpool could be wise to hold off on making a midfield splurge until next summer. James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are currently in the final year of their contracts, further forcing Jurgen Klopp’s hand.
