Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim urging Matheus Nunes to stay amidst links to Liverpool

Ruben Amorim is desperately trying to convince Matheus Nunes to stay at Sporting CP for another season, with the Portuguese star being linked to Liverpool, according to O Jogo, via Paisley Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The 19-time Portuguese champions are keen on keeping their 23-year-old midfielder for one more season at the club. First-team coach Amorim has also made his intentions clear as he’s not willing to give his star player away.

But Nunes is supposedly not sure about staying at Sporting CP. The 23-year-old is hesitant about his future with the Portuguese side, opening the door for a move away from Lisbon.

Liverpool have an ageing first-team midfield with both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara in their 30s. James Milner is another option who is 36.

We do possess an abundance of youth in the squad as well though. Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones provide talented prospects for Jurgen Klopp to choose from.

Elliot and Carvalho are still 19. The Englishman has already been tried and tested in the middle of the park by Klopp successfully. The Portuguese arrived this summer and has played as a midfielder during pre-season.

But Elliott and Carvalho are both more attacking options rather than traditional box-to-box players. The duo started off their career in more attacking roles before the gaffer played them in the midfield. Jones, on the other hand, is a more natural midfielder who has already established himself in our squad.

But with Naby Keita and James Milner’s contracts ending at the end of next season, we need to look to the future. Squad depth is a key factor in challenging for silverware.

Nunes is a decent option if Liverpool’s aim is to bring in a player and develop them. But fans wouldn’t think the 23-year-old currently has the quality to be a starter in Merseyside.
