Liverpool tracking young La Liga winger with €50m release clause

Liverpool tracking the progress of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams

According to a Spanish publication, AS (h/t the Mirror) Liverpool have set their sights on Athletic Bilbao attacker, Nico Williams, who would be an exciting talent for the future. The 20-year-old is the younger brother of club icon, Inaki Williams who was also linked with a move to Anfield years ago.

The 20-year-old is being closely watched by the Reds, but his €50 million release clause could drive the Liverpool board in the opposite direction of making a deal happen.

Nico Williams is a product of the famed academy of Athletic Bilbao and his performances have lightened the San Mamés stadium. The right-winger made his senior debut for the Spanish club in 2021 and since then, he has made 41 appearances in all competitions and has scored three goals

The Spanish attacker’s ability to play with both feet and clean dribbling skills have been his strength and he would benefit from signing for a club that would bring out the best in him.

Liverpool have witnessed a major revamp in their attacking unit as players like Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, and Takumi Minamino have left the club this summer. The Reds have significantly strengthened their front line by adding star striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica and Luis Diaz from FC Porto.

However, the right-wing is one area where depth is lacking. Star winger Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly the number one choice to play at his position, but the club would still prefer to get in Williams to secure the position for the future.

Jurgen Klopp would benefit from having a young prospect like Nico Williams and the player himself would have a world-class player like Salah to learn from.

However, the Reds would need to meet his €50 million release clause in order to bring him to Anfield. This would seem to be a smart addition for the future but the club would also prefer to monitor the player for one more season before making any transfer decision.

It remains to be seen whether the player justifies the price tag with his performances for Athletic Bilbao next season.
