Liverpool considered going for Vitinha before PSG stepped in their way
Former FC Porto midfielder Vitinha was apparently a target for Liverpool this summer, but eventually, the Reds shifted their attention away from any deal. Liverpool Echo claim that the PSG star would have ticked so many boxes for Jurgen Klopp this year that they seriously considered signing him.
The Reds would have analyzed the 22-year-old’s potential as he was available in the transfer market this summer for a cut-price deal. Additionally, as several of their midfielders are into their 30s, Liverpool would have needed a new player in that area to strengthen the squad’s core.
But in the end, the Reds never actually moved a bit. With a £35 million offer, Paris Saint-Germain entered the competition, and Liverpool posed no obstacles. Vitinha was eventually picked up by the French giants with zero competition from the Anfield side.
A few months before, Liverpool had acquired Luis Diaz from Porto, and he was an instant success. Therefore, it made sense for the Reds to focus on signing another star from the Portuguese league. Naturally, they did that as Darwin Nunez arrived from Benfica this summer for a hefty fee.
But even after Nunez’s arrival, the Reds would have favored the chance to sign some fresh legs in midfield. The 22-year-old midfielder can fill more advanced positions with his passing, dribbling, and tackling abilities making him a smart addition for most sides.
Meanwhile, the Reds are supposedly linked to Matheus Nunes of Sporting CP, another midfielder from Portugal. Jude Bellingham is also another target in midfield, who would be a valuable asset for the Reds.
As a result of the abundance of alternatives in Liverpool’s midfield going into the new campaign, a number of younger players are being loaned out to other teams to obtain first-team experience, with Tyler Morton expected to be the next to go.

But that shouldn’t be confused with Liverpool’s long-term vulnerability in that area. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, and James Milner aren’t spring chickens at their age and it’s best for the Reds to future-proof their midfield.
