“Needs massive improvement”- Klopp bemoans Liverpool’s performance against Fulham

Jurgen Klopp holds back no punches as Liverpool draw against Fulham

As per Metro, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was not happy with his players’ performance during the 2-2 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage in their opening Premier League game of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Reds trailed twice on the night and were far from their best. While they improved in the second half it was not enough to win the game.

When asked about what went wrong in the game, Klopp wasn’t too complimentary about his team’s attitude, especially in the early parts of the game.

Despite both Fulham goals having some degree of controversy (Jordan Henderson getting fouled in the build-up to the first goal and Aleksandr Mitrovic falling down too easily to win the penalty for the second), the Reds’ manager did not blame the referee for any of the decisions. He instead went on to demand more from his players.

The result is fine, we didn’t deserve more. The performance needs massive improvement.

Mitrovic opened the scoring for Fulham in the 32nd minute, climbing up at the back post to beat Trent Alexander-Arnold in the air and thumping his header past Alisson Becker. Just 13 minutes after coming on in the second half, league debutant Darwin Nunez scored with a cheeky finish to equalise for Liverpool.

The home side regained the lead in the 72nd minute when Virgil van Dijk nibbled enough at Mitrovic in the box to make him go down. The subsequent penalty was converted by the striker.

Liverpool were not done though and Mohamed Salah latched onto a loose ball after a touch from Nunez to calmly slot the ball home. With that goal, the Egyptian equalled a Premier League record for the number of goals on the first day of a season. Unfortunately, it was not enough to secure all three points.

Jordan Henderson hit the crossbar seconds from the final whistle in what was the Reds’ last chance to claim victory from the jaws of defeat. Hopefully the manager’s words are heeded before our next game against Crystal Palace at Anfield.
