In the 2-2 draw against Fulham on Saturday, Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara was subbed off after 50 minutes following a hamstring issue.
Reports from The Metro
suggest that this might turn out to be a long-term injury and Liverpool’s German manager described it as “very bad”.Following Thiago’s injury, Liverpool’s only fit midfielders are Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliot. This leaves us spread thin with the season just one game old.
The 31-year-old Spaniard has been a creative spark in Liverpool’s midfield since his signing in 2020. He has featured for the Reds 50 times including the appearance against Fulham this Saturday.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Klopp said that “a transfer might make sense now” sparking speculations over the club trying to secure the services of a midfielder before the transfer window deadline.
“This is not a good situation, I don’t like it at all, but we have to see how we react on that – but for sure not panicking.”
Klopp would obviously want to believe that the midfield options he has at his disposal now should be enough, but it is not easy to gauge what might happen in the future, with Liverpool’s injury list increasing.
Along with Thiago, the injured midfielders list includes Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the latter, who is out for a prolonged period of time following an injury in the preseason.
“It is not that we lack midfielders, but it’s just some of them are injured.”
With the recovery time for Thiago yet to be measured, Klopp has a task at hand to see whether his other options are good enough, or he needs to look at the transfer window. If his words are to be believed, it is going to be more of the former than the latter.
Thiago has been the club’s creative force, dictating the team’s tempo from midfield. How quickly he will return to action remains to be seen.
