Report: Liverpool need to fork out a king’s ransom to land long-term Serie A target

Liverpool must pay around £75-100m if they are to sign Nicolo Barella

According to a report in the Mirror, Liverpool will have to pay somewhere around £75-100m if they are to sign Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella. The Italian international has been on the Reds’ radar for some years now, since his time at Caligari.

The 25-year-old is one of the sought-after midfielders in Europe and has played massive parts in Inter Milan’s domestic success in the recent past. He also starred for Italy in last summer’s Euros.

He has 39 appearances for the national team and remains a key player for Roberto Mancini’s side. Unfortunately, he will not be taking part in this year’s World Cup following the Azzurri’s failure to qualify.

Barella extended his contract at Inter last November until the summer of 2026. That is definitely one of the contributing factors to Inter’s rather high asking price.

Liverpool does have injury issues in midfield. The confirmation of Thiago Alcantara’s injury lasting around six weeks means the squad is currently without four first-team midfielders – Thiago, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Three of them are out for a considerable amount of time.

Having said that, even if the squad was fully fit and healthy, Barella’s quality as a player undoubtedly. He is a great technician on the ball, can play passes under pressure and is defensively very good. At 25, he is getting nearer to his peak, meaning the best years are ahead of him.

Hence, while the price tag is high, the player demands that respect in the transfer market. He has the capabilities to make that Liverpool midfield go one step better for this season and beyond.

So, the club should think of going into negotiations with Inter regarding the 25-year-old and see whether they can bring down the transfer fee or get the player onside to arrive in Merseyside before the summer window deadline day.
