According to The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool Academy player Oakley Cannonier has agreed to a long-term deal with the club, being rightly rewarded for his impressive performances with the U-18s squad last season.
The youngster is famously known for being the ball boy whose quick thinking resulted in the Trent-Alexander Arnold assist to Divock Origi in the famous Champions League encounter between Liverpool and FC Barcelona.
The 18-year-old scored 41 goals for the U-18s last season and will be hoping to replicate his form when he joins the U-21 group for the upcoming season.
It can be said that the links between Liverpool’s first team and academy are closer than ever with many youngsters making the step up to gain first-team debuts.
Some notable names such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones are important members of the Liverpool squad. They are proven examples of making the rise from the Academy to the Premier League.
Oakley Connonier would hope to follow in similar footsteps and with the club offering a long-term contract, it shows the club’s confidence in the youngster to make the step up.
The Reds have several young prospects in their youth squads and can future-proof the roster by developing their abilities. Cannonier already has made a name for himself in Liverpool folklore and could be afforded the chance to repeat it, this time as a player.
The upcoming season will present Connonier with a more challenging task of tougher opposition and club chiefs will be having a close eye on how he handles it.
