According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Liverpool transfer target Matheus Nunes has accepted an offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers’ with personal terms also agreed. A €50m deal was earlier accepted by Sporting CP for the Portuguese midfielder
Following Liverpool’s withdrawal from bidding for the 23 year old, Wolves had a clear path ahead of them to complete the signing. One of the top young players in Europe, this could prove to be a steal for the Molineux side.
This sees Bruno Lage spill out a club record fee to secure the services of Nunes. Wolves’ other signings this summer include Goncalo Guedes for £27m from Valencia and Nathan Collins from Burnley for £20.5m.
Liverpool were expected to bid for the Portuguese following injuries to midfield mainstay Thiago Alcantara who is out for a prolonged period of time. This after he sustained an injury on the opening matchday of the league, against Fulham.
Gaffer Jurgen Klopp, in an earlier press conference
stated that the club weren’t stubborn and would “sign the right players”. This might imply that Nunes was ruled out for not being the right fit in the system.A decision to not sign a midfielder so late into the transfer market might prove to be expensive. Even against Crystal Palace on Monday, the midfield was loose at times. James Milner, who certainly can put in a shift, should not be starting for Liverpool at the age of 36.
The fact that Klopp is going on with the current depth of the squad shows the confidence he has in the young blood in the squad. But not having an experienced starter midfielder can be troublesome come the end of the season.
