Report: Liverpool youngsters shortlisted for Golden Boy award

Liverpool youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho have been shortlisted for the 2022 Golden Boy award

According to the club’s official website, Liverpool youngsters Harvey Elliot

and Fabio Carvalho have been shortlisted in the top 60 for the 2022 Golden Boy award.

The Golden Boy award was started in 2003 and is a recognition given to the best youngster aged 21 or under for his exceptional performances in the calendar year. The award has made a particular reputation for itself by recognising talent at a young age who have gone on to become legends of the game.

Some notable names of past winners of Golden Boy are Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe amongst many others.

Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest winner of the award

Having a place amongst the best young talents in the world can do a world of good to any youngster and provide him with the right confidence to compete at the highest level.

Since its inception twenty years back, the Golden Boy award has gained immense popularity among the community in its search for the next big generational talent. More often than not, the award justifies the hype and potential surrounding the player. Last year’s winner Pedri of FC Barcelona is a perfect example of that.

The Spaniard rose to prominence in being able to make the step up from youth team to Barcelona’s first team to represent his nation at the Euros and the Olympics all in the space of one year.

Hence, to be included in the 60-man shortlist would be a big confidence booster for both Elliot and Carvalho in their quest to break into the Liverpool first-team for the 2022/23 season.

Elliott was out of action for a long duration after suffering a fractured dislocation of his left ankle against Leeds United last season. However, he made a miraculous recovery to regain fitness and was part of the latter stages of Liverpool’s quadruple run.

Fabio Carvalho was signed from Fulham for a fee of £5 million after an impressive showing in the Championship scoring 11 goals and notching up eight assists to help the Cottagers secure promotion to the Premier League.

There is still a long time to go for the Golden Boy winner to be announced with the ceremony happening in Turin later this year.

For now, the aim of the talented youngsters would be to be part of the 40-man shortlist for the Golden Boy shortlist that is set to be announced next month.
