Following the Reds’ shock 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Liverpool goalkeeper spoke to the club’s official website and talked about the opposition learning how the Merseysiders play. (h/t Liverpool Echo).
The Brazilian believes that their rivals try to exploit certain weaknesses in Liverpool’s style of play. Liverpool’s high line of defence has been effective more often than not, but on Monday night, United’s forward made a show out of the defence with their high-paced attacks.
Goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho proved to be a mountain to climb for the Reds as we couldn’t follow up after Mohamed Salah scored a goal in the dying moments of the game.
The former AS Roma keeper also added that the Reds should be more “aggressive” in defence. This comes after Jadon Sancho’s attempt on goal was not even blocked by Virgil van Dijk, who had an unusually below-average game against United.
“Teams, when they play against us, they know the way we play and they try to exploit that and they try to use that against us. (It’s) something that most times works for us, (but) sometimes we get punished for that and tonight it is what happened.”
Liverpool’s midfield was at the receiving end of a lot of criticism following the unexpected falter at the hands of their arch-rivals. The club is sort of going through a transitional phase in midfield. At 36, James Milner is still starting games for Liverpool in the league.
This is just a reflection of the poor depth of the squad at the moment. Jordan Henderson started at defensive midfield instead of Fabinho.
Even with the club being “well-prepared” according to Alisson, some of the on-field decisions by the players could have been better. He spoke about the importance
of being consistent and “coming back to clean sheets”.“We trained and prepared for the game thinking different possibilities. I believe we were well prepared but could execute better on the pitch by making better choices and better moves and being a little bit more aggressive in a good way defensive-wise.”
The Reds are winless from their first three fixtures in the league this season. Liverpool have a lot of catching up to do to get near their title challenging rivals, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
With Thiago out injured, Liverpool lack creativity in the midfield. And with the problem being magnified after this shocking defeat, it becomes almost necessary for the club to get a midfielder on board before the conclusion of the transfer window. The legs of Henderson and Milner are not sufficient for the Reds to compete in all four trophies.
Liverpool are currently 16th in the league table with two draws and a loss from three games. The Merseysiders need to get back on winning ways as soon as possible, hopefully starting with AFC Bournemouth on Saturday. After the newly promoted rivals, Liverpool play Newcastle United.
