Liverpool might look to sign Leandro Paredes of Paris Saint-Germain
According to calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Reds ‘might’ look to sign Argentine Leandro Paredes of Paris Saint-Germain owing to multiple injuries in midfield this season.
The 28-year-old chiefly plays in defensive midfield but can also put in a shift at central midfield. The former Roma man joined Paris in 2019 from St. Zenit Petersburg for £35m. Since then, he has been a vital cog in the French outfit. Although, he has been out of favour for the last season or so.
Paredes’ strength lies in his passing ability and his skill to create chances from deep inside his own half. He can play in a two-man pivot, and also the deepest player in a three-man midfield. The Argentine is also a target for AS Roma and Juventus.
Liverpool injury crisis
Following injuries to Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones, the Reds are in dire straits in terms of signing a midfielder. Very recently, just before the Manchester United game, Naby Keita was also ruled out owing to injury.
This leaves the club with no primary central midfielders apart from Jordan Henderson and James Milner who have a combined age of 68 years. With both of them ageing as well, the club need to sign long-term replacements for these two players.
Paredes’ signing will also see a competitor for Fabinho’s number 6 role. The club has not had a natural defensive midfielder since the signing of the Brazilian and healthy competition will push each other to do better.
Liverpool have had a very disappointing start to their league campaign, winless from three games and a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of their rivals, Manchester United. They would look to bolster their lineup with a recognised starter midfielder before the transfer window ends.
A signing for Paredes though seems unlikely as he is not the type of player Liverpool generally play with. The club is in need of creative midfielders who can carry the ball into the opposition’s box and create a goal threat by swarming around the penalty area.
