Liverpool offered Roberto Firmino to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a straight swap deal for midfielder Leandro Paredes, according to CalcioMercatoWeb (h/t the Mirror).
However, it was refused and as a result, Juventus sprung into action to seal a deal for the former AS Roma and Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder. Manager Jurgen Klopp denied wanting to sell Firmino amid talks of a swap deal involving Adrien Rabiot.
However, this latest development, if true, could show that the Reds are eager to sign a midfielder and consider Firmino expendable. The Brazilian international has been painfully subpar for us in recent months.
He struggled with injuries last season and seems to have lost a bit of his mojo during that time. Darwin Nunez has come in to be our main man up front.
However, his red card against Crystal Palace set Firmino up for one of his most disappointing games for Liverpool when he started against Manchester United this Monday in a 2-1 loss.
It’s a shame we missed out on Paredes. He is a quality central midfielder who can also play as a deep-lying playmaker in the number six role.
That is a kind of versatility we can use, especially considering Fabinho Tavares lacks any natural backup in that position. Paredes seems like a missed opportunity but the Reds cannot afford to sit quietly now.
There is a need for a central midfielder and it is urgent, given Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s latest injuries. It is also unwise to offer our senior players as a part of any potential swap deals because that negates the point of signing another player to increase the overall squad depth.
Having lost Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi and not replacing them with any player on the bench capable of playing their roles, it is a foolish idea to see another one of our attackers leave this summer.
