Liverpool have entered the race to sign Sander Berge from Sheffield United this summer, according to the Yorkshire Post.
The Reds are in need of midfielders, something that has now been acknowledged by manager Jurgen Klopp. Speaking ahead of the game against Bournemouth in the Premier League, the German said (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“I know we have had this discussion since it all started and I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder and you were all right and I was wrong. Now we go for a midfielder. That’s the situation. But the specific point doesn’t change – we will do something but it has to be the right one.”
If Berge is the “right one”, then LFC fans may not be best pleased with this option. The 24-year-old has failed to impress in the Premier League and is currently playing in the Championship with the Blades.
While that shouldn’t mean that onlookers undermine his ability, he isn’t the world-class presence that Reds fans were hoping to see in their potential midfield this season He only has 29 Premier League appearances to his name but has been a decent presence for his team in the Championship over the last 12 months or so.
To add to that, he apparently has a release clause in the region of £35million. That is a considerable amount of money for a 24-year-old player not playing in the first division.
Fans would rather hope the club steers in the direction of signing a proven senior midfielder such as Frenkie de Jong or someone of his ilk. Ruben Neves is another name linked with the Reds this summer.
Liverpool would be wise to not think of this potential midfield addition as a stop-gap solution. The midfield is aging and in Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, we have injury-prone players that make it hard to rely on them for the entirety of the season.
