According to the Lancashire Telegraph, 20-year-old Liverpool centre-back Sepp van den Berg is expected to join Blackburn Rovers on loan before the transfer deadline on 1st September. The Reds have had a good history with loaning out players to the Rovers, including Harvey Elliott two seasons ago, and more recently, Leighton Clarkson.
Over the pre-season, the Dutchman worked with Liverpool’s first team. A season-long loan is set to go through for the former Preston North End man. The Championship side played him in 66 games
across all competitions during his two seasons at the club. For Liverpool’s first team, he has featured four times, including three in the EFL Cup and one in the FA Cup during the 2019/20 season. He has garnered a good amount of experience in the Championship for his age.
He might not break into the starting XI unless there is an emergency of sorts. Joe Gomez is comfortably placed alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence. With Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips also in the fray, Van der Berg is best the sixth choice option.
The young Dutchman still has a long way to go to gain the gaffer’s trust to see himself in the starting XI for a league game. In such times, a loan move for the Dutchman would be ideal to oversee his development.
Several young players of the squad oversaw a loan move this summer. Rhys Williams has moved to Blackpool and meanwhile, the likes of Tyler Morton and Conor Bradley have moved to lower-division English teams as well.
Another loan move for the youngster, in either a lower division club or a lower PL club, should be beneficial.
With Klopp trusting either Konate or Gomez in Matip’s absence, Van den Berg leaving the club on loan should do him a world of good.
