Gary Neville expects Liverpool to battle for a top four spot
After the shaky start to the season for the Merseysiders, many pundits were quick to dismiss Liverpool and say that the Reds would find it tough to enter the top four. Gary Neville, though, feels Liverpool would finish in one of the UCL spots for next season. (h/t Liverpool Echo) [ as spoken on Sky Sports]
Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will make the top three is what he said. The fourth spot though is up for grabs between Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United according to the Sky Sports pundit.
Presently, Liverpool are sitting in the seventh spot in the standings. Picking up only half of the available points, the Reds’ two latest fixtures include the win against Newcastle United and the draw with Everton.
“I think City, Liverpool and Tottenham will finish in the top three”.[Then it’s between] Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United. You think Liverpool will come good don’t you because of what they’ve done. I think United will struggle to get into the top four personally. I just think Tottenham, Liverpool and City will.”
Even with Liverpool’s shaky start to the season, Gary’s predictions come as contrary to what is happening. Even with United beating Arsenal 3-1, Neville believes his old team will struggle to make it to the UCL spots.
“You think Liverpool will come good don’t you because of what they’ve done. I think United will struggle to get into the top four personally. I just think Tottenham, Liverpool and City will.”
Liverpool concluded their transfer business this summer with the loan signing of Arthur Melo from Juventus. Alongside the Brazilian, Liverpool earlier completed the signings of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay.
Nevertheless, given the team’s form over the past few years, a mere top 4 finish won’t suffice. Liverpool are title contenders and it should remain like that for as long as possible.
