Sergio Porrini expected more from Liverpool against Napoli last week
Glasgow Rangers icon and two-time Scottish Premiership winner Sergio Porrini spoke to the Daily Record about several things, including the Napoli vs Liverpool game, wherein apparently, he expected more from the Reds.
In a 4-1 loss at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Liverpool were completely blown away by Luciano Spalletti’s team. Three goals before the half-time mark and an early goal in the second half left Jurgen Klopp’s team completely perplexed. Napoli’s target man Victor Osimhen gave the Reds all sorts of trouble.
Joe Gomez had one of his worst games in Liverpool colours and was completely dominated by Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Luis Diaz slotted one past Alex Meret but that was obviously just a consolation goal. Apart from Diaz and Thiago Alcantara, who came on in the 62nd minute, no Liverpool player was up to standard.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah also was kept rather quiet by the Napoli backline. The Egyptian has had a dry spell in front of goal for quite a while now. Virgil van Dijk gave away a penalty, which was very uncharacteristic of him, although Alisson Becker saved it to keep the scoreline at 1-0 during that moment.
But taking nothing away from Napoli, they made it look really easy to put 4 past Liverpool. That is what even Porrini thought and spoke about. It was indeed a very disappointing night for the Reds at Naples.
“I expected much more from Liverpool. Napoli are still a young team, with new players like the defender Kim Min-jae in defence. But they did so well against Liverpool. They have so much enthusiasm. I expected them to play a good match – but not to win so comfortably.”
It is definitely not the kind of start the Reds would have wanted going into the season, but there is still enough time for a comeback and they would hope to get back soon.
With the Premier League on a halt owing to the Queen’s death, the Reds will next face Ajax in the UEFA Champions League and would hope to get their UCL campaign on winning ways against the Dutch team.

A repeat of the performance in Naples just cannot happen. A loss against the Dutch side at Anfield could really make qualification a huge ask going into the last four matchdays.
