According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool could be dealt a blow in their pursuit of talented Spanish midfielder Pablo Gavi with the Spanish playmaker set to sign a contract extension with Barcelona before October.
One of the most talented players coming out of La Masia in recent years, it is almost easy to forget that Gavi is just 18 years old. He is already a regular starter at the Spanish club and along with Pedri, Barcelona can boast of one of the most exciting midfield duos in world football.
Gavi is everything that you could ask for in a midfielder. He is exceptional on the ball, has an excellent eye for a pass, and can pick out teammates but where the Spaniard truly stands out is his work off the ball.
For someone of the stature of the teenage starlet, Gavi is exceptionally tenacious and is not afraid to fly into a tackle. He never gives up and always gives his 100% whenever he is on the pitch be it for Spain or Barcelona.
Not every day do you see an 18-year-old prodigy starting week in, week out for a club of Barcelona’s stature and even being a regular starter for Luis Enrique and the Spanish national team.
Popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the deal the Spanish giants have offered Gavi will see him stay at the club until 2026 with a release clause of one billion euros.
There is absolutely no doubt that Gavi would have been the perfect midfielder for Liverpool. As we all know, it is one area of the pitch where the Reds lack a bit of quality and Gavi would have been an insane addition.
Adding an 18-year-old to a midfield with ageing warriors could just have been what Klopp needed to get the best out of this team. Gavi would have been tailormade to the kind of football Liverpool play.
However, it looks like Liverpool will not get their midfield target and will have to look at other options in the next transfer window. That is, if they retained their interest in the young Spaniard after the window shut down.
His potential suitors could be dealt a blow with any new deal that Gavi signs considering the fact that Barca would want to have a bigger say when it comes to the teenager’s future if he does put pen to paper on a new deal at Camp Nou.
That is especially the case if his contract does contain a €1billion release clause, which would make him virtually unaffordable for arguably every club in the world.
