Liverpool icon Dean Saunders believes the club should have signed Heung-Min Son to replace Sadio Mane
Ex- Liverpool striker Dean Saunders speaking to talkSPORT (h/t The Express), said that he thought that the Merseysiders would replace the outgoing Sadio Mane with a proven superstar in Heung-min Son.
Saunders, who played for the Reds between 1991-1992 believes that the South Korean international would have been an ideal replacement for Mane, who moved to Bayern Munich for £27.5m + £7.5m in add-ons.
“When [Sadio] Mane was leaving Liverpool, I thought there are only a couple of players who could replace him, and I thought Son [Heung-min] would have been the one”
It has been pointed out by many pundits that Liverpool’s struggles this season are due to Mane departing from the club. The Senegalese international played an extremely crucial role in the Reds’ success over the years. The former Southampton winger was one of gaffer Jurgen Klopp’s first major signings at the club.
Heung-min Son and Liverpool
Son, on the other hand, has been a vital cog for Tottenham Hotspur. The 30-year-old won the Premier League golden boot last season, sharing the honours with Mohamed Salah. In addition, Son’s playmaking abilities are extremely good as well.
This season though, with a change in Spurs’ manager Antonio Conte’s style of play of attacking with inverted wingbacks, Son’s output in front of goal has diminished significantly. He is yet to score this season and has got just a single assist.
Moreover, Liverpool showed interest in the winger in the past as well. To cope with the loss of Mane, the Reds signed Darwin Nunez for a club-record fee but he is yet to prove his worth. Luis Diaz on the other hand, who joined the club in January, has been performing consistently and has become a fan favourite.
Saunders’ expectations though are justified as most fans also expected to see a proven European player join the Reds to replace Mane. Instead, the club opted for securing the future by signing a rather young player in Darwin.
Son, from what appears in photographs, seems to have a good relationship with Jurgen Klopp. One could only imagine what that partnership would be like at Liverpool as it is highly unlikely that the Reds might push for a move for the former Bayer Leverkusen winger.

Liverpool’s struggles this season though have come to a kind of a halt after their win vs the Amsterdam outfit Ajax but there is a long way to go and hopefully, this win sparks a change in the general air at Liverpool and moreover, see the club win more games.
