Liverpool to rekindle interest in Matheus Nunes next summer
After losing Matheus Nunes in the later stages of the transfer window to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool plan to rope in the midfielder next summer, in 2023 This is according to @BrunoAndrd via LFC Transfer Room (h/t Liverpool Echo).
Liverpool were among the clubs in contention to sign the 24-year-old from Sporting CP earlier this summer. Amidst interest from the Reds, Manchester City and West Ham United, the Portuguese decided to join Bruno Lage at the West Midlands outfit.
Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of Nunes and wishes to see him in Liverpool colours come next summer when several contracts at Liverpool including that of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be on the verge of expiring.
The midfielder caught the attention of Europe’s elite in the 20/21 season wherein he was an integral part of Sporting’s campaign wherein they won the Portuguese league title. His last season in Portugal was equally special too, wherein they reached the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Nunes was instrumental in the campaign, playing 50 games across all competitions. Moreover, he scored four goals and racked up five assists as well. And accordingly, it became evident for him to move elsewhere. Liverpool would have given the player the luxury of the UEFA Champions League.
However, that is beside the point. The player has a long career ahead of him and there will be opportunities for him to move elsewhere too. Liverpool is obviously an option as the top management is familiar with his style of play and wants him on board. Moreover, said reports also say that Klopp is an admirer of Enzo Fernandez of Benfica as well.

It has become well and clear that the Reds need reinforcements in the middle of the park following this season’s injury scare and a string of inconsistent performances. Nunes was a target in the past, and well and truly could be a possible target for next summer as well.
