The January transfer window could see the Reds move for a player in the midfield department given the slim options the Reds have at their disposal presently. Marco Asensio has emerged as a player the Reds could target come the winter according to Sport (h/t liverpool.com). The Spaniard was on the wishlist of the Reds earlier in the summer window as well.
The 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Carlo Ancelloti’s squad following the signings of Edouardo Camavinga and Aurelim Tchouameni. The emergence of Federico Valverde has further diminished the former Mallorca man’s presence in the team.
With the Reds in need of a midfielder who can be a fitting presence in the middle of the park and a midfielder as versatile as Asensio available on the market, it almost seems like the Spaniard should be the natural option for Liverpool.
Asensio has featured only three times this season, cumulatively playing a total of fewer than 45 minutes. With diminishing minutes for the Spaniard, it does not come as a shock that he is seeking a move away from Los Blancos.
His future at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu looks bleak at the moment. It is, however, subject to change if the situation at Real Madrid demands more minutes from the 26-year-old. But presently, there is not much of an opportunity for Asensio under Ancelotti.
He is a very good presser through the middle of the pitch. His link-up play along with the wingers and the ferocious shot on goal he has to offer is something which can suit the Reds. To make the comparison easier to understand, he can offer something like what Harvey Elliott is doing right now, but with the added benefit of being defensively more solid. The Englishman is still a work in progress whereas Asensio is a three-time UEFA Champions League winner, playing important roles in all three campaigns.
Asensio is a good fit for any team which prefers the counter-attacking style of play. His pacy style of play and finishing abilities suits the Reds’ approach to the game like a glove.
From a theoretical perspective, a move for the player seems beneficial for both Liverpool and Asensio. A young attack-minded midfielder is what the Reds are in need of and the Spaniard is looking for a change and the promise of game-time.
