Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been mocked over social media for nearly hitting a corner flag in Uruguay training (h/t Daily Mail
).The 23-year-old striker joined the Reds this summer in a £85 million deal from Benfica. But he has not lived up to the fees so far.
And now, the player who is away on international duty has been trending on social media due to a catastrophic shot he took at training. The clip trending is attached below:
The footage, as seen above, is jokingly set to the Champions League anthem and shows Nunez fouling a team-mate for the ball and is still allowed to continue running towards the goal.
He then, without any pressure from any defender, shoots the ball which flies towards the corner flag, nearly hitting it. Football fans have taken this video to mock Liverpool fans who naturally saw it fit to compare him to Erling Haaland this summer.
The Norwegian, like Nunez, was a fairly young striker with a reputation for scoring goals. He already has 14 goals in 10 appearances for Manchester City since joining from Borussia Dortmund.
Nunez, meanwhile, has only two goals in six appearances
for the club in all competitions. The 23-year-old also infamously headbutted Crystal Palace centre-back, Joachim Andersen, in their 1-1 draw at home last month. That headbutt led to a three-match suspension for the striker. He has already been struggling and now this trending video of him in the training does not really help his cause, nor for the fans who have been defending him.
Uruguay will play Iran for a friendly this Friday. Nunez is likely to start and fans will hope that he can get on the scoresheet to reignite his Benfica form.
