Transfer News: Liverpool target Joao Gomes pens new contract at Flamengo

21-year-old Brazilian Joao Gomes very recently penned down a new deal with Flamengo amid Liverpool links, as per Liverpool Echo. The defensive midfielder has been the subject of scouting from Liverpool’s representatives not very long ago.

The youngster is a popular name in Brazil and is headlined to join a top European club soon. Liverpool more than any other club. The Reds are presently facing a crisis pertaining to the midfield and hence, links to a quality young midfielder come naturally.

Gomes’ new contract with Flamengo extends to the summer of 2027. The primarily defensive-midfielder has played 107 games for the Brazilian club so far, scoring on four occasions and assisting thrice. Being a goal threat is not his predominant feature.

Gomes has in the past spoken of his likeness for Liverpool and his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League. He describes his want of playing with Europe’s elite as “a dream” for himself and his family.

With his long-term future now contractually obligated with the Mengão, Liverpool would now know that have to pay a pretty penny for the highly-rated youngster. He is known in his home country for his ball-carrying progress.

With a strong physical presence in the middle of the pitch, it is not the easiest of tasks to push Gomes off the ball when in progression. Moreover, his ability and skill to find passes to build play from the back is something the Reds can use.

Liverpool could do with a signing like Gomes, as it will give a proper like-to-like replacement for Fabinho, whose time at the Reds has been without competition for his place.
