Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan makes Liverpool admission

Speaking to The Telegraph (h/t Liverpool Echo), Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan admitted that there was a point last season where he felt that Liverpool were “unstoppable”.

Last year’s Premier League campaign went to the last day of the season, with Man City edging out the Reds by a meagre point. The Citizens came back from a two-goal disadvantage winning 3-2 at the end of 90 minutes against Aston Villa. All Liverpool needed was a draw or a loss for City to emerge with the Premier League title, but City’s resilience took the title away from the Reds.

The 31-year-old believes that having the Reds as a competition pushed City to perform out of their skin and play consistently at the top level. In the last few years, the Premier League has seen utmost domination from both these teams. Man City have won the league every season since 2018 bar the 2020 campaign wherein the Reds emerged victorious.

“It’s incredible to have a team like Liverpool who you have to compete with and who play with such intensity. They push every single game and for a period of time last season they felt unstoppable.”

New Gen Rivalry

In the three times, Liverpool played Manchester City last season, two games ended in a draw. Such was the competition and balance between both sides that it became too tough to decide on an eventual winner.

The one occasion wherein the Reds emerged victorious against the Citizens was in the FA Cup semi-finals. Liverpool played City in the curtain-raising FA Community Shield game earlier this season, with the Reds emerging victorious.

The actual league campaign though sees a major difference as Manchester City sits comfortably on the top of the table after five wins in seven games. Liverpool on the other hand, are in the eighth position winning only two of their six fixtures.
