Fabrizio Romano plays down Enzo Fernandes to Liverpool links
Liverpool is one of the clubs with links to multiple midfielders for a transfer in the summer window of 2023. Several contracts at the club expire next year, reasoning the fact that the Reds are looking to strengthen their midfield department.
Very recently, SL Benfica’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez was subject to rumours linking him to Liverpool. The 21-year-old has impressed so far in his debut season in Europe and also has had a good beginning with the national team. He debuted for Argentina’s senior team just last week.
The central midfielder has a release clause of €120m in his contract with the Portuguese outfit. Even though it is unlikely that Liverpool would trigger the clause, few publishings believe that the Reds could move for the midfielder in the winter transfer window.
However, with those claims, also comes Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano’s piece for CaughtOffside wherein he claimed that a transfer for the midfielder is the least of things the people around him are thinking about.
“As for Enzo Fernandez, he has just arrived at Benfica, he’s focused on Benfica and on the World Cup – no one close to him wants to speak about a potential transfer now. Let’s see in the summer! “
With it being “public knowledge” that Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield next year, Romano also joked that the Reds would see themselves linked with 20-30 midfielders in the coming months as they are looking for “a top midfielder in 2023”.
Having said that, accelerated interests for any player could gain momentum at any time giving rise to more speculation. However, with the Argentine having signed a contract with Benfica until 2027, a transfer this January seems improbable.
With other options at disposal for Liverpool, including the likes of Jude Bellingham, it will be interesting to see whether Enzo would be one of the midfielders the Reds are luring to pull to play at Anfield starting in 2023.
