“Not a January deal”- Paul Robinson does not see 20-year-old Liverpool target leaving mid-season

Liverpool sent blunt Moises Caicedo verdict amid January transfer rumours

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that Brighton & Hove Albion will not sell midfielder Moises Caicedo in January.

Liverpool were linked with Moises Caicedo for the majority of the summer transfer window however a deal could not materialise, mainly due to Brighton’s firm stance on selling their prized assets after having already sold key players in Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella.

Liverpool instead went ahead and signed Brazilian international Arthur Melo on loan from Juvention which includes an option to buy. The move suggests that the Reds identify the growing issues with their ageing midfield and want to add depth to the team.

Caicedo’s stock has risen exponentially since his move to Brighton and although he has made only 16 first-team appearances for the Seagulls, top teams have already registered an interest in the player.

Manchester United and Chelsea have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Caicedo but Paul Robinson believes that it would be tough to sign the midfielder in January with a new manager coming in and Brighton in no urgency to sell.

“No chance. That is not a January deal. Brighton are not in a situation where they need to sell players.

They will want to give the manager (Roberto De Zerbi) time to assess his squad and his players. They might bring in players that the manager wants but I cannot see a player like Caicedo leaving.”

The former Spurs player who made 175 appearances for the club is correct in his assessment of the situation and most likely it would be very tough to persuade Brighton to sell their star player in the winter transfer window.

It would be wise to say that contrary to popular opinion, it actually suits in the best interest of the player to stay at least one more year at the Amex where he is guaranteed regular playing time. He is just 20 and already on the path of becoming a very important player for club and country.

With age on his side and the potential to reach the very top, it is crucial that Caicedo gets regular minutes under his belt and gain some experience in the league. If we can offer that, then it would be smart to chase him. If not, it remains to be seen if he would want to swap playing in the first team for sitting on the bench in most games at a big club.
