Joel Matip highlights Alisson Becker’s performance in Liverpool vs Brighton
Speaking after Liverpool’s frustrating 3-3 draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion, Joel Matip spoke highly of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and how the Brazilian was fantastic on the night.
It was a rare sight to see a visiting player score three goals at Anfield. Leonardo Trossard became the first player after Andrey Arshavin back in 2009 to score a hat-trick at the Reds’ home.
Liverpool played well to come back from a two-goal deficit but a late goal from the Belgian halted the scoring in the game. A cross into the box went through the legs of Van Dijk and Trossard was quick to latch on to it.
Speaking to BBC Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Matip pointed out the fact that the performances need to improve. He also spoke about the way Alisson played and how important the Brazilian was in the game and in general.
“It was better but we are still not happy with our performance, especially at home. We expect more from ourselves. It’s great, even in not a good game for us, he (Roberto Firmino) scores. That’s brilliant. He (Alisson) was there to save our backs again and hopefully he does not have as many saves to make in the future. I don’t care who is coming, we just have to step up and do better.”
Allison has been a wall for Liverpool.
The former AS Roma keeper was probably Liverpool’s best player in the game. The scoreline would’ve looked much worse if Alisson did not have his A-Game on. Even though the argument that he let past three goals is valid, he alone could be blamed for the goals.
The second and the third goal in particular. Jordan Henderson lost the ball around the edge of the box and made it easy for Brighton from there on. Virgil Van Dijk let a cross go through his feet for Trossard to easily finish it off late in the game.
Alisson, apart from that, had three saves in the game, two of them tough dives and his distribution was excellent as well.
With the shaky defence this season, Alisson deserves a lot of credit. The campaign would’ve been much worse off if not for his saves even in games wherein the team has conceded a number of goals.

The major problem is not even the defence to be fair. A number of midfield injuries have led to multiple people playing in a lot of roles and that has led to there not existing a proper style of play. Once the midfield settles, matches would be much easier for Liverpool.
