“Be patient”- Klopp gives his take on underused summer signing

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp talks about Darwin Nunez being used sparingly

In his pre-match conference ahead of the match against Rangers in the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke about summer signing Darwin Nunez and his lack of playing time in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan joined the club earlier this summer from SL Benfica for a potential club-record transfer fee worth up to £85m. The player has not had the best of starts to life in Liverpool colours. After scoring two goals and getting an assist in his first two competitive games, things have gone downhill for the 23-year-old.

A red card against Crystal Palace ensured that he would miss the next three league fixtures. But even after that, Darwin has not got a lot of action due to Roberto Firmino being in sublime form.

Darwin’s Form

With his form being a point of discussion, given he has not been up to the hype generated so far, few questions have been raised over the fee that Liverpool forked out to land him.

Klopp spoke in his pre-match conference (via Fabrizio Romano’s Twitter) about Nunez and called for patience. It has obviously been a tough transition for the player and the lack of regular playing is not shocking given that he will need to get up to speed with the style of play.

The Reds’ gaffer also said that it is important for the club to be patient with the Uruguayan as he still adapting to the English game. Liverpool are calm regarding his form and appear to know what they are doing.

Besides that, Darwin is in contention to play against Rangers in the UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday night. The Uruguayan can be given a chance against the Scottish side. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side despite their form in the league, have not got off to a good start in the Champions League.

Nunez’s direct approach in front of goal would pose a threat to the Rangers’ backline. And additionally, in the probability that he gets a goal or two tomorrow, his confidence will only improve, handing the club a bonus ahead of a busy October.
