Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde flattered by comparisons to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard
Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has had a fantastic start to the season with 6 goal contributions in all competitions so far and his performances have earned him comparisons to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
In an interview with Infobae (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Uruguayan midfielder was asked what he made of the comparisons to which he admitted his admiration for the former Liverpool captain and that such comparisons are a confidence booster for any player.
“It is spectacular that you are compared to such a player, to a star, a world idol, not just from Liverpool.
It’s spectacular, I see characteristics of him, obviously I’m not going to say no, but one always looks out for oneself. It’s nice because it has to serve as motivation for you to be compared to a player like that.”
Liverpool have been a pretty good side under Jurgen Klopp for the past few seasons, however, have not yet been to fulfil the void left by Steven Gerrard.
It is speculated that Liverpool would go heavy for a top midfielder in the next summer transfer window with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham named as one of the primary targets.
Valverde’s name has also been mentioned among the list of candidates to revitalise an ageing midfield and such interest has been concrete in the past with unsuccessful bids.
With the recent comparisons, a player of such quality would instantaneously lift the standards of the team and as a dynamic box-to-box, it would be wise to say that Valverde would suit the team’s style of play.
It remains to be seen whether the recent comparisons would create any impact over a possible transfer for the midfielder, with Real Madrid having no plans to sell their rising star currently.
Madrid have been successful in the transition of their midfield with the era of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro coming to an end and Valverde is a key cog in their rebuilding process.
Hence, it would be tough to prize him away from the Spanish capital and would need serious action to make him switch sides. It will be an interesting summer window with Jurgen Klopp keen to invest heavily to land a top midfielder with many targets already being scouted.

It remains to be seen whether the club would go back for Valverde considering the heavy effort and convincing it would require or choose to concentrate on a more attainable target. It has been claimed recently that the Reds could plot a “crazy” offer for him.
