Speaking to Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan spoke about gaffer Jurgen Klopp’s impact on the club and talked about his latest contract extension. His old contract was until 2024 and earlier this year in April, he signed a two-year extension taking it to 2026.
October 8th this year marked seven years of Jurgen Klopp at the club and in that time, he has taken the club to dizzying heights, winning every possible top-flight trophy football has to offer. The highlight of his Liverpool managerial career though would be a game wherein Liverpool did not even play.
In the 2019/20 season, wherein club football saw a halt due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, Liverpool clinched their 19th league title and first in 30 years. With Manchester City losing to Chelsea in June 2020 via a Willian penalty, Pep Guardiola’s men were mathematically out of the title race.
This handed the title to Liverpool who ended an extremely long wait to earn the tag of “Champions of England” once again.
Speaking about Klopp’s extension and a potential role beyond his tenure at the club for the German, Hogan said the following.
“It shows how strong his feelings for the club are – and also how important he is to us. We haven’t talked about that (him becoming a club ambassador) yet, but I can well imagine that we’ll discuss it one day. He’s already a Liverpool legend – his connection with Liverpool will last forever. It’s like a lifetime contract.”
Liverpool’s current club ambassadors are Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen. Klopp would certainly enjoy the company in case he becomes one of Liverpool’s ambassadors. The German knows the club inside out and is a major reason why we are ‘back on our perch’.
Hogan also added that the former Mainz manager “could fill any leadership position in sport and business”. There is a lot of speculation over who would take over the role of the gaffer at the club after Klopp’s departure.
Two of the media front-runners since last year – before Klopp penned his new deal – include Steven Gerrard and current assistant coach Pep Ljinders. With Gerrard still mastering his craft of managing a Premier League team in Aston Villa, one could assume that the Dutchman would take over in the current scenario.
Nevertheless, there is still a lot of time to go for that decision and it is not an immediate worry for the club. The worry lies elsewhere, as we sit 10th in the league table after seven league games.
Even though Klopp has nothing to prove to anyone, it will be interesting to see how the gaffer goes about in the current situation with Liverpool certainly not off to a good start to their campaign this season.
