Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness advises Jurgen Klopp to give strength to Liverpool’s midfield

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT (h/t The Express), former Liverpool captain and manager Graeme Souness believes that the club needs to strengthen their midfield in the next transfer window.

The central area of the pitch has been one of the Reds’ biggest concerns this season. Inconsistent performances and an ageing midfield have been troubling Liverpool since the turn of the season.

Most of Liverpool’s midfield is over the age of 30. Skipper Jordan Henderson is 32, James Milner is 36 years old, Thiago Alcantara will be 32 by the time the next window comes around and Fabinho is presently 29. Younger options in Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been disappointing.

The trio of Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones show promise but they’re still on the learning curve and only one of them i.e Jones is a natural number 8. With that being said, Liverpool certainly need more bodies in midfield. Souness did not have a different thing to say.

“Where they’ve made a mistake, I said it early season, I think the midfield is screaming out for strengthening. You’ve got Thiago, at 31, Henderson 32, [James] Milner 37, Fabinho 28 – which is the perfect age for where he plays – young players coming through, [Naby] Keita for me isn’t good, that’s an obvious area that they need to strengthen and that comes down to the manager.”

Transitional phase for Liverpool

Souness is bang on target with the fact that Liverpool have done a mistake by not signing a midfield earlier this summer. But the winter transfer window is a good opportunity to bolster the squad, given even our deadline day signing Arthur Melo is out until early 2023.

There is no doubt that Liverpool need a new body in the middle of the park, and after the loss against Arsenal, shouts for a new midfielder will just echo louder. Ismael Bennacer is one of the latest names to get linked with the club. Hopefully, next summer or this January window, we could see at least one new face added to the middle of the park.

Moreover, Liverpool have injuries in other positions which will not be an ideal situation. The next run of games promises to be a huge challenge for Klopp and his men, but hopefully, Liverpool can get the best result possible from these said games.
