James Pearce confirms positive contract talks between Liverpool and Roberto Firmino
As per The Athletic (subscription required), the negotiations for a new deal between Roberto Firmino and Liverpool are positive and the Brazilian is likely to stay beyond 2023.
The 31-year-old is Jurgen Klopp’s most used player during the German’s time at the club. That is enough proof of how much trust there is in the player to get the club through the tough moments.
Even though he had a tough couple of seasons with the club from 2020-2022, this season seems to have resurrected him and he is Liverpool’s top scorer and assist-maker in the league. More recently, he scored a brace and got an assist against Glasgow Rangers in the UCL.
Here is what Pearce wrote in The Athletic about Firmino’s contract situation:
“All parties are understood to be relaxed about his contract situation. The club’s relationship with the player and his representative is strong and discussions about the future have been described as open and ongoing.”
“Before a ball was kicked this season, it looked highly likely that Firmino would leave on a free transfer next summer after eight seasons at Anfield. If this early-season renaissance is sustained, Liverpool would be wise to keep him around beyond 2023.”
In 339 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, Bobby has 106 goals and 78 assists. His game is much beyond goals and assists. Firmino plays the role of a “false 9” to a tee.
Holding up play to release the wingers at the right moments and dropping back to the midfield to help defend is something that Firmino specialises in. He is also called the “pressing machine” by certain sections of Liverpool fans.
With the way he has rebuilt himself this season, contributing to the team in all ways possible, a new contract won’t be long for the former Hoffenheim striker. One of Brendan Rodgers’ last signings at the club, he is now Klopp’s statistically most trusted man at Merseyside.
With Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez’s introduction to the team, Firmino has found in himself the motivation to earn that place in the starting XI and potentially, make the Brazil squad for the World Cup later this year.

There is absolutely no way he does not start against Manchester City this weekend unless Klopp wants to fiddle with his lineup. Given his form right now, there would hardly be anyone willing to drop Bobby.
