Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has asked Liverpool to go for both Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in the summer.
It is not a new story that Liverpool’s ageing midfield requires a major revamp with Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and James Milner not getting any younger.
To maintain the dominance and control that Jurgen Klopp has established over the years, they would need solid high-quality midfielders who could be part of the team for years to come.
According to Robinson, Bellingham and Rice fit the bill perfectly and advised the club to go for both players instead of one.
“If Liverpool are a European superpower they should sign both. They would both fit in excellently well
It is an area (midfield) Liverpool are struggling in.
“It would be difficult financially to get both Rice and Bellingham but it would be a price worth paying in my opinion. They are two brilliant players who have their best years ahead of them.”
Speculations around Liverpool touting a big money move for Bellingham have been doing the rounds for some time.
The hype around Bellingham was created with his time at Birmingham City, who eventually retired the player’s jersey number after his move to Borussia Dortmund, proving the expectations from his former club on the young talent.
He has grown heaps and bounds since his move to Borussia Dortmund and is now a key member of the team, captaining the squad recently in their UEFA Champions League encounter.
Almost all top teams in the world would be after the Englishman’s signature, who also made his senior team debut under Gareth Southgate and now is heavily touted to be part of England’s official World Cup squad.
Robinson believes that Bellingham’s national teammate, Declan Rice, should also be given proper consideration as a target by the club considering the ability and experience that the West Ham United captain possesses.
As with Bellingham, Rice is touted to have a switch to a big club in the near future with many expecting Chelsea and Manchester United to go all out for the holding midfielder.
Already a first-choice starting midfielder for the national team, Rice has established himself as one of the most complete midfielders in the country and would instantly improve any team which acquires his services.
Hence, it remains to be seen whether the club pays heed to Robinson’s advice considering it would take a lot of financial power to pull off something like that. However, it does make Liverpool extremely strong if the proposed moves indeed take place.
